About Genoselect

Your partner for herd genotyping

GenoSelect is the central service unit of the DAC consortium for genetic evaluation on the basis of a cooperation agreement between Rinderzucht Austria and ASR.
For breeders of the dual-purpose breeds Fleckvieh and Brown Swiss outside the contract countries, we offer the use of genomic prediction for female cattle (herd genotyping).

What you need to know

Genomic breeding value estimation is a method of genetic evaluation in which the results of a genomic analysis (SNP genotyping) are included in addition to performance and pedigree information. This makes it possible to make reliable predictions about the breeding value long before the availability of own or offspring performance. This offer offers breeders the advantage of early selection with limited capacity of barn and arable land.

Preconditions

Professional herd genotyping

  • Only female cattle of the Fleckvieh and Browns Swiss breeds can be typed.
  • Processing and invoicing is carried out by approved distributors (see contactlist bündler)
  • Herd genotyping via GenoSelect is not available in the following countries:
    Fleckvieh: Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary
    Brown Swiss: Austria, Germany

    Interested breeders in these countries should contact the national breed organisations.
  • Connection to the phenotype population in the genetic evaluation must be given and checked in advance, i.e.:
    Sire or paternal grandsire and maternal grandsire are included with daughter phenotypes in the DAC genetic evaluation. This requirement is usually fulfilled if the paternal and maternal grandsires are listed in the bull data bases www.zuchtwert.at or BaZI Rind.

Procedure

Procedure of genotyping

Punches for the collection of ear tissue samples can only be obtained from GenoSelect. These are delivered by LKV Bayern with separate invoicing. For more information and to order, please visit info@genoselect.com.

1. Submission of the Excel form with the following information:

  • Customer number (will be assigned after conclusion of the contract)
  • Sample number (on the ear punch)
  • Breed and sex (females only!)
  • Candidate’s life ear tag in ISO format
    (e.g. DE 09 123 45 678)
  • Life ear tag of sire
  • Life ear tag of paternal grandsire
  • Life ear tag of dam with date of birth
  • Life ear tag of maternal grandsire
  • Life ear tag of maternal granddam with date of birth

The import of ear tissue samples from third countries is subject to the necessary veterinary approval. Please observe the procedure described therein and the requirements.

2. Conducting the analyses

Once the punch and all the necessary data and documents are available, the sample is genotyped.

3. Return of the breeding values

  • via e-mail as CSV file
  • after the next candidate run and after the next nine main estimations (3 years in total), within 14 days after the respective publication date (see downloads)
  • To customers and distributors at the same time
Participation

Participation of national herdbook associations in genomic selection

  • The participation of other populations of Fleckvieh cattle (dual purpose) and Brown Swiss in common genomic evaluation is possible and encouraged. The prerequisite is a contract between GenoSelect and a national herdbook association.
  • We can offer the following options:
    • Female genotyping option
    • Partial access transition option (Prerequisite: Participation with at least two of the following four trait complexes in the common genetic evaluation: milk, meat, fitness, conformation)
    • Full access option (Prerequisite: Participation with the trait complexes milk, beef, longevity, fertility, conformation in the common genetic evaluation and contribution to innovation (i.e. creation of a cows‘ training sample for health traits).
  • Use the genotyped bulls in artifical insemination
    • For genotyped male animals and embryos of the Brown Swiss and Fleckvieh breeds that are used by an insemination center not listed in the following list of insemination centres contributing to the common GS system, the buyer is obliged to pay a fee of 24% of the net purchase price, but not less than €7,500. This also applies to farm-gate sales. This also applies to animals that change hands or are directly or indirectly made available for the production of semen or are used on a contract basis. The first use of a bull in question must be reported to the GenoSelect service unit, which is responsible for collecting the fee.
    • Alternatively, the above additional fee for registration for continuous genetic evaluation can be paid to the GenoSelect service unit (valid from 1st June 2024).
